Big Cypress National Preserve prescribed fire
The National Park Service along with USDA Forestry and the Florida Forest Service conduct controlled prescribed burns on the various habitats of the Big Cypress National Preserve. In order to restore fire to its natural role in the ecosystem, the controlled fires are used to reduce hazardous fuel loads near developed areas, control disease in young pines, wildlife habitat improvement, range management, preservation of endangered plant and animal species, and the maintenance of fire-dependent ecosystems.
