Alligators

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) once faced extinction. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service placed them on the endangered species list in 1967. The legal protection worked. Brought back from the brink of extinction, today over a million of these reptiles survive in the southeastern United States. They are a common sight in most areas of Florida.
